For any business, the advantages of a website will never be realized without the foundation of a well researched information strategy. Our first step towards building a successful website strategy involves performing an analysis of both our client and their competitor’s strengths and opportunities. This evaluation gives us a stable platform to design a website that expresses your company’s values in a clear and concise manner. The end result is always a positive return on investment and a tangible sustained impact on your bottom line.

Strategy Defined: A coordinated plans of research, co-creative design and tactical implementation created to enable your website generate specific desired outcome(s) in your constituents.

Competencies: Any web strategy should begin by an evaluation of your company’s core competencies; that is, your strengths, weaknesses, mission and vision. In order to gain insight into core competencies, business leaders should ask specific questions regarding their internal and external qualities: What are the areas in which your company excels? Does your company offer something intangible like a service or is it a tangible product? For example, if you’re company is a premier restaurant, is your strength primarily in your food, or is it a combination of great food, terrific customer service and a comfortable setting? Once your competency areas are targeted, your web strategy should be designed to extend important features onto your website as well.

Competition: Another extremely important element to consider when building a web strategy is your competitor’s approach. A competitor analysis will offer your business tremendous insight into their competencies, strategies and approach to extending identity on the Internet. The information gleamed from the competitor analysis allows your company to build an active framework for differentiation; that is, the ability to distinguish and communicate your unique properties and attributes from your competitors.

Constraints: From a business perspective, the two most obvious constraints involved in planning a web strategy center around a business’ financial limitations and also the time-frame of the design process. However, there are several important, constraints businesses should consider when planning a web strategy. Issues such as regional and cultural limitations can have a tremendous impact on your overall strategy, especially when overlooked. For example, what are the cultural strengths and weaknesses, the education levels and intellectual capacities of your target audience? Is your target audience liberal or conservative? What are the language barriers involved? These questions all represent very important issues which will ultimately define and shape your web strategy.

Content: In terms of information design, content includes everything communicated through image and word. By paying direct attention to your site’s information design, content is the primary driving force of your business’ identity, products and services and a fundamental building block of a web strategy.

Function: A website’s functional aspects play a tremendous role in your overall web strategy. Simply put, function determines what tasks you will allow your customers to do on your site.
